North Bay, Canada
Sunday 25 March 2018
In a game where the lead changed hands six teams, Russia beat United States by 6-5 to take the bronze medals at the Ford World Women’s Curling Championship 2018 in North Bay’s Memorial Gardens, in Canada, on Sunday (25 March) morning.
Both of these teams were making their first appearances at this level. After giving up a steal of one point in the second end, Russia – skip Victoria Moiseeva, third Julia Portunova, second player Galina Arsenkina and lead Julia Guzieva, supported by alternate Anna Sidorova and coach Sergei Belanov – made amends in the third end when skip Moiseeva drew her last stone into position to score two points and take the lead, at 2-1.
After a blank fourth end, United States levelled the score at 2-2 in the fifth end when their skip Jamie Sinclair drew into the house to score one point. United States then had another single-point steal in the sixth end for a 3-2 lead.
Then, after another blank end in the seventh, Russia took the lead again in the eighth end when Moiseeva hit out a United States stone to score two points and lead by 4-3. The lead then changed hands yet again – for the fifth time – in the ninth end, when Sinclair drew her last stone onto position to join another American stone sitting on the button, to score two points and lead by 5-4.
Finally, in the tenth end, Moiseeva drew her last stone into the house to score the two points that gave her a 6-5 win and the world bronze medals.
The world championship now concludes on Sunday afternoon with the gold medal final between Canada – unbeaten at this event so far – and Olympic champions Sweden.
